My sister memorized The Song of Hiawatha and because she went around reciting it all day long I, too, had it pretty much memorized at the time. I can still say..."on the shores of Gitchi Gumi..." (but I don't know how to spell that! Nor do I recall much more of the poem.
Bonnie, I had several favorites during my teen years which I have consequently forgotten through failure to recite them. However, we were required to memorize limericks (?sp)...
I wish my room had a door I don't so much care for a door, But this walking around Without touching the ground, Is getting to be quite a bore!
...And...
A flea and a fly in a flu, Were caught & didn't know what to do, Said the fly, let us flee, Said the flea, let us fly, So they flew through a flaw in the flu!

...Isn't it funny what gets trapped in memory?
