My love for Wyeth's paintings

Came from my husband ! His favorite painting
is Christina's World and then he loves Nighthawks
by Edward Hopper. They were friends and Hopper's
work is more modern, Wyeth's more of the earth.
A link sent by a friend with a good quote by Wyeth.
We went to Cushing , Maine for our 25th anniversary
so we could see Christina Olson's house. We stayed
in a house a mile down the road so we walked to it!
Now to get to Chicago to see Night Hawks.
Andrew Wyeth's newest watercolor on his site.

Snow Hill

IN honor of Andrew Wyeth who
died last week, his Snow Hill, from
The Chadds Ford Gallery:

“This is not just a pleasant picture,” says Andrew Wyeth. “It’s a culmination. These are all people I’ve painted in the past”. His models - neighbors all - dance around a winter maypole in gleeful anticipation of Andrew Wyeth’s death.
The models Karl and Anna Kuerner, Helga Testorf, Bill Loper, Allan Lynch and Adam Johnson are dancing on top of the Kuerners’ hill in view of all the locations where they lived and were painted by Andrew Wyeth. The empty streamer represents the artist who once said, “I wish I could be invisible when I’m painting.”
At the foot of the hill, the Kuerner farm, at the left - one of Andrew’s favorite subjects - stands beside the railroad tracks that lead to the crossing where N.C. Wyeth was killed by a train in 1945.

Another weekend

Of kids in and out, big and
small, older and the one
younger ( my Emma). My
6 week checkup showed my
hip replacement doing well,
my knee needs to be more mobile
and thus my hip will be. More
work for me in PT but that will
get me more back to normal. That
means walking around the block
soon. Somehow that seems like
what it has been all about AND
feeding the in and out family this
weekend~~
we've ( husband and I ) been out to
dinner two nights in a row.
Out to wonderful dinner tables at
my brother's and a dear friend's tonight.
Hospitality to the soul !

Almost friday

Which means my 6 week
appt..... a trip up to Greensboro.
I get to walk in this time!
I've made a track to walk through
the kitchen to the living room, round
through two doors to the foyer.
It was great on Inauguration Day
as I kept the tv on all day! So unusual
for me or our house, but a historical
day for sure. Pray as this day is the
anniversary of Roe vs. Wade and what
is going to lifted.

Hard to resist....

Brownies right out of the
oven , topped with ice cream
on a cold, wintery day.Just
as warm as the mocha lattes
I've been making. Trying to
cut back on sugar since the
holidays BUT too hard when
the house fills with chocolate
smells and there's ice cream in
the house.

Seafood Chow- - dah!

The dinner table wasn't as
full as I had thought it would
be on Saturday night. I called
my sister for a Seafood Chowder
recipe.Her husband fishes!
Shrimp was on sale and that
is my husband's favorite. We
also had flounder in the freezer
from the beach, fresh at the dock!
It was delicious! Thanks for your
suggestions. I'm sure your table
was as tasty this past weekend.
Now it looks like snow!

Seafood Chowder
( From Cooking Light)

8-12 slices of cooked bacon, crumbled
1 large onion, chopped
2 celery , chopped
1 1/2 lbs. potatoes, cubed
3 8 oz. clam juice ( I used 2 with chicken broth for remainder)
1 c. heavy cream ( can use half cream , half milk, or all milk)
2 cups of milk
1 lb. shrimp ( I also put in bits of flounder, use any seafood)
3 tbsp. parsley
salt and pepper to taste.

Cook onions and celery in bacon drippings after cooking bacon.
Potatoes, onions, celery in liquid, except the milk or cream.
Cook for 15 mins. until potatoes are done. Add bacon and
seafood. When all is cooked , add milk and cream. Parsley on
top before serving. Taste for salt and pepper.

Certainly the day calls for a fire in the fireplace

After my husband does Saturday
errands, many for me ( grocery stores),
he will build a fire! The first and maybe
the only one this winter. I can't help and
I love stoking it and keeping it hot.
Oldest son takes a CPA exam this afternoon.
Second son passed the entrance exam
for the Police Academy. He graduates with
a Criminal Justice degree in May. Third son
is home from Boone . The coldest day he's
ever felt as he went to class on friday! Good
to have the dinner table fill up and extra
hands to help. I've already gotten the question:
"What are we having for dinner?" hmmmm......
Any ideas for a dinner by a fire but not a
campfire! ?

Chestnut Soup

Those are sauteed apple slices on top
of homemade Chestnut Soup that a
dear friend made for us to celebrate
a late Christmas together. She cooked
the chestnuts for 3 days , simmering
and adding flavors. A Supper of the
Lamb lunch by my friend who cooked
for us in that book club discussion. We
had Bavarian Apple Torte plus a homemade
mocha to top it off. YUM....wish you could
have joined us!

The Real Thing: 101 Dalmatians

Emma and I watched the
recent movies on youtube
a few weekends ago. We got
the book by Dodie Smith from
the library. I loved her book
"I Capture the Castle" so we
wondered how this dog book
was. DIFFERENT than the movie
Emma declared today. "Much
better" as she plopped the
book on my bed ( I was resting
with Orthodoxy!) and said "Read it."
Peter Pan is the same: a very
good book. What others are like
that? hmmmmmmm............

Beatrix Potter

Thank goodness I was never sent to school;
it would have rubbed off some of the originality.

Found them

You know when you lose something
in your house that cannot walk, it
drives you crazy. One compression
stocking was on my chest under a stack
of books and the other turned up this
morning in with my underwear! I
got ticked at both , but have some
swelling so need them, well at least
one for my right leg. I always ask for
the Spirit's help in finding what is
lost, even souls.

God's amazing provisions

A heart can be full of thankfulness
as Scripture says and when you
keep being blessed with food and
encouragement by friends, family,
and again friends, you have to
praise God with all of your heart.
That's been my week as I started
back to teaching one literature class
to the high school students of Gileskirk.
We're on to Chesterton.
Not a day has gone by without such
things as meals, tea visits, etc....
And today ends the chills from the
blood thinner. One full month.
Funny how we couldn't find either
compression stocking this morning
as this time to keep my blood from
clotting ends. I know they are around
here somewhere because they can't
walk without my legs!

A little bit of Christmas

Emma and I made Gingerbread
cookies today with dough my sister
had left in the fridge three weeks ago.
They are yummy.

Photo is of downtown Southern Pines.
They put a real tree on every corner and shops and organizations decorate them. A Mitford town.

Moms of many children

Another dear friend dropped in
for a visit today. The mom of 5
boys! She's 20 years younger than
me and always inspires me to see
beauty and to use my hands. She
had her knitting with her! A hat
for the youngest who is almost a
year. She was bearing gifts ,both
handmade. Look on her blog for
her husband's link , not sure it's
there for his woodworking with
her new headliner. The b0ys are
famous for those boots! She loved
the quiet in my house, for only Ken
was home. Unusual still today and
I know what she means.When I'm
homes the silence is a soothing musical
to my soul.

Personal Delivery

My dear friend brought a basket
of English tea, cups , tea spoons,
Christmas napkins, and tea biscuits
over in the late morning. I was cheered
up from seeing her. She left a thank you
note marked "Personal Delivery" and I
had another conversation with her after
she left. Hospitality for the soul.
